A Little Beauty

I closed my apartment door, kicked off my shoes as I crossed the living room and stopped in the middle of the kitchen doorway, smiling at the little sprig of flowers on my table.

It hadn’t been a bad day, necessarily, just a very long one, full of minor annoyances and irritations. By the time Howell and I had gotten back to the precinct after our shift, I had forgotten all about little Carly Varona running up to me in the hall, as I was leaving for work and she was coming in for bedtime, and holding out the small branch of pale pink flowers. The blooms were closed tight, a dozen quarter-inch buds just waiting for the sunlight.

“Cherry blossoms, Officer Zeke!” she’d said, grinning. “I picked ‘em for you!”

I’d risked running late to find them some water- I didn’t have any vases, but a clean jam jar did the trick- and here they were, waiting for me to come home.

I wasn’t really a plant person, not because I didn’t like them, but because I couldn’t keep them alive. But this little sprig could only live so long already, and I could enjoy its beauty while it lasted, without having to worry about dooming it with my inattention.

As the first golden rays of morning slanted through my kitchen window, the petals started to open, the fluttering edges painted gold by the sunlight, and I went to bed feeling much better than I had when I’d left work.

THE END
