Technically on Duty
Contrary to what the movies tell you, us vampires can see our reflections in the mirror.
Not that I was terribly pleased with mine, just then, poking at my bangs to try and make them lie flat. I ran some water over my fingers and tried again, but no luck. Maybe I could just keep my hat on today?
Behind me, the apartment intercom buzzed, and I moved to hit it. “Yo!”
“Jones, you’d better be dressed,” said the voice of my partner, without any kind of greeting. “We’ve got a call..”
I didn’t bother to answer, just grabbed my uniform jacket and my go-mug of coffee and pounded down the stairs to where he had our patrol car waiting. “We’re not even technically on duty yet,” I complained, even as I grabbed our radio to officially, technically put us on duty.
“Crime can’t wait for your beauty sleep, Jones,” said Howell. “We’re doing a canvass of 3rd and Market, looking for witnesses to a murder.”
“Murder?” I repeated.
“Just came over the wire.”
I opened the file on our in-car computer, and frowned. “Seriously, sir? Did this guy manage to kill himself trying to fake his own death?”
“Jones, you know better than to believe the preliminary reports,” said Howell. “But we are ordered to ask potential witnesses if they heard any plotting or planning on the part of our victim.”
“Of course we are, sir,” I said.
