Artistic Release

“You know, I like these calls,” I said, as my partner and I stopped inside the open apartment doorway. “The ones that don’t involve actual criminals.”

“Only because annoying a police officer isn’t an actual crime,” Howell replied. “Yet.”

“Come on, guys,” said the apartment’s owner- Paul Hampton, trust fund kid and aspiring metal sculptor- from where he was trapped, again, inside one of his own creations. “This isn’t funny.”

It was the fifth time in as many weeks that Paul had called the police for something just like this, and the third that Howell and I were the responding officers.

“It’s a little funny, Paul,” I said. “How do you even manage this?”

The artist’s shoulders slumped. “I don’t know. I was trying to solder this piece, here, and I needed the right angle, and the next thing I knew…”

“You welded yourself in,” I finished. I took a thick knife out of my pocket and opened one of its blades. There was a section of soldering that looked less sturdy than the others, and I was pretty sure I could pop it open. “Sir, can you come pull on this section?”

“Hey, that’s my masterpiece!” Paul protested.

“Do you want out of here or not?” I demanded. The seam popped easily and Howell peeled back the section of aluminum to let Paul out. “And when you put it back? Try soldering from the outside.”

He nodded. “Thanks. You know, for coming.”

“We serve and protect,” said Howell. “Even the people who don’t seem to learn.”

“Seriously,” I added. “The outside.”

Paul smiled. “Yes, ma’am.”
