Bonded Elements

They still weren’t sure how it had happened.

One moment, they had finished setting up their experiment to measure the effects of willpower on standard household spells- Dylan with his wand in hand, ready to cast their list of enchantments and Jerome with his laptop, ready to record their no-doubt groundbreaking results- when everything exploded.

All right, nothing had actually exploded, Jerome discovered, as he untangled himself from his toppled chair and got to his feet. Dylan had been thrown against the wall and Jerome’s heart stopped for a moment when he saw his friend’s crumpled form. Then, Dylan moaned and looked up, and Jerome felt a bolt of pure joy shoot through him.

Dylan must have felt it, too, because his eyes widened- and had they always been that particular shade of blue?- and he scrambled to stand. Jerome moved to help him automatically, grabbing Dylan’s hand to pull him up like he must have done a thousand times before. But the moment their fingers touched, there was another heart-stopping jolt and Dylan stumbled.

Jerome caught him, not letting go once the other man was back on his feet. “Did we just…?” he breathed.

Dylan nodded against his shoulder, arms coming up to wind around Jerome’s waist. “Yeah. Yeah, I think we did.”

“How?” Jerome asked. “I’ve touched you thousands of times. How… how could we soul-bond now?”

They had been friends for over twenty years, since the first day of second grade. They had seen each other when they were sick, injured, giddy, drunk, despondent, hysterical, elated, sleep-deprived and just about every state and emotion in between.

Dylan pulled back to look at Jerome and took a deep breath. “Maybe,” he said, slowly. “Maybe we just couldn’t see what was right in front of us?”

Jerome blinked, because of course- and leaned in to kiss Dylan, hard. His best friend, his soul mate froze for only a fraction of a second, before kissing him back, pulling him close until they were forced to break for air.

“So, that happened,” said Dylan, grinning.

Jerome laughed, and kissed him again.
