“So,” I said, leaning a hip against my partner’s desk. “I heard a rumor.”
“I’m sure you did,” said Howell and didn’t look up from his paperwork. “Whatever it is, I’m sure it isn’t true and you shouldn’t pay any attention to it.”
There was a space between his stacks of folders exactly big enough for my butt, so I hopped up to sit in it. Howell gave me a sharp look, but didn’t say anything, so I pretended not to notice it.
“Really?” I said. “Because I heard that you weren’t actually slated to be a training officer the year I came out of the Academy. I heard that it wasn’t much of a secret, my, you know, vampirism. So, none of the other training officers were really keen to take me on. And I heard that you got yourself reassigned back, just so I could be your partner.”
Howell snorted. “And where did you hear a silly rumor like that?”
“Oh, around. You know.”
“Jones…”
“I knew I was the last one assigned a training partner,” I said, softly. “And I always kind of thought they stuck you with me, because you were mean to your rookies. But you asked for me, didn’t you, sir?”
Howell looked up, smiling-without-smiling, which was entirely in his eyes and something I’d never seen anyone else do. “You don’t honestly expect me to answer that, do you, Hezekia?”
I grinned. “Of course not.”
