True Blue

I hated it when politicians made speeches. It was hard enough when they needed a few extra cops to handle the crowds, but the worst was when they wanted us to stand around looking stiff and orderly.

I’m not very good at ‘orderly’, just ask my partner, so I never understood how I always got selected for parade duty.

“Because you’re pretty,” Howell said, matter-of-factly, and I must have looked surprised, because he added, “It’s no secret that they want conventionally attractive people for their photo-ops, and since they only have our service photos to work with, they don’t know what a pain in the ass you are.”

That was more like it.

“Well, maybe I should tell them, sir, and I could get out of this?”

Howell arched an eyebrow. “Duty, Officer Jones,” he said, deadpan.

I scowled and fiddled with the tie of my dress uniform. He tapped my fingers out of the way and produced a perfect knot in under three seconds.

“Hezekia,” said Howell, a little stiffly. “These politicians have asked to stand with Philadelphia’s finest, and that definitely includes you.”

I grinned, and my good mood lasted all the way through Senator What’s-His-Name’s boring speech.

THE END
