Stay for Breakfast
It had been a long, long case. Longer than McGee could remember, or would have been able to remember, if only his brain was working properly.
And it hadn't even been that difficult or dangerous a case, just unbelievably time-consuming. Every lead led them in circles, wheels within wheels of lies and deceptions. They'd split up to cover more ground- McGee and Abby following the suspect's digital trail, Tony and Ziva chasing down physical leads, Gibbs and Vance in MTAC doing who-knew-what, even Ducky and Palmer working up a psychological profile- but it didn't seem to make the work any faster.
Gibbs's call, saying they'd found their killer and gotten his confession, had seemed almost unreal.
The two computer experts stared at each other for a long moment. "So," said McGee. "I think I owe you dinner."
Abby laughed. "You do owe me dinner. But it's noon, McGee."
"Oh. Can we make it lunch, then?"
"No," she replied. "Besides, aren't you too tired to think about food?"
He opened his mouth to argue and yawned widely. "Rain check?"
Abby reached for her coat. "I have a better idea. You drive me home, we get some sleep, and you can make me breakfast."
"I..." McGee's brain was having trouble keeping up. "I can't cook."
She laughed again. "Not really what I had in mind, Timmy."
"What? Oh. Oh. Abby..."
Abby smiled fondly at him. "We really can just sleep, McGee. I just think we're both too tired to be left on our own."
"Or we could not sleep," he blurted, then blushed. "I mean, no, we should get some sleep. But then...?"
Her smile became a grin. "I would love to not-sleep with you, Tim."
McGee grinned back and helped Abby into her coat. "About that breakfast?"
"Timmy..."
"We'll get take-out."
