Risks

"Hey, McGee," said Abby, coming up beside his desk. "Do you want to go for a walk?"

He looked up at her, slightly confused. It wasn't the question that was odd- the things Abby asked him were usually much stranger- but there was definitely something off about her tonight.

"Sure, Abs," said McGee, his confusion slowly giving way to concern when she simply nodded.

Abby didn't say anything as McGee powered down his computer, left a print-out of his report on Gibbs's desk and grabbed his coat. She was quiet for the entire elevator ride to the lobby and as they entered the park.

By now, McGee was starting to seriously worry. He'd never seen Abby so quiet, except when she was sick and even then, she was up and about as soon as possible.

"Abby..." he began, but she shook her head quickly.

"Please, Tim, can we just walk?"

He nodded. She tucked her hand through his elbow and leaned her head against his shoulder.

The trained investigator in him wanted to ask her what was wrong, to push her until he got answers.

But he didn't.

He only set his other hand over Abby's and kept walking. Around them, the sky grew dark, but Abby stayed quiet. They walked until the streetlamps flickered to life and Metro cops began patrolling the park. (They were sharp, though- McGee showed his badge to the first, and they were left alone.)

Somewhere, a clock struck. One in the morning.

"It was this case," said Abby suddenly. "The lieutenant and her husband waited years for her to be off active duty so they could start a family and he gets murdered, for no reason. I don't want that to happen to us, Timmy!"

McGee squeezed her hand. "I know my job is dangerous..."

She shook her head. "We've already wasted so much time. I know it'll be hard, because neither of us can give up our jobs, and we'll have to work out some kind of schedule, but I just don't think we should wait anymore. Some things are worth the risk."

It took him a moment to follow her train of thought, and when he caught up, his eyes widened. "Does that mean-? Abby, are we going to have a baby?"

"Well, not immediately. But maybe soon?"

McGee just kissed her, and Abby decided to take that as a 'yes'.
