Back By Bedtime

Jack had known that he could never fully retire from the Stargate Program.

For the rest of the Air Force, even for the Special Forces, there was always somebody else could be trained to take their place. But nobody could be trained to have such a strong expression of the Ancient gene, or the residue of knowledge from an Ancient database, so Jack found himself gearing up for a real, non-milk-run mission for the first time since Jake had been born.

He had been through the gate more than once in the last eight years, but those had been more like camping trips than real missions - always to planets that had already been thoroughly explored and/or had Marine patrols on duty.

This was an emergency, though, a previously dormant Ancient thingamabob on P4X-1743 that had suddenly woken up and started using the planet’s geothermal energy to create random bursts of electricity very near to populated areas. One person had died already and a dozen fires had been started, but so far no one had been able to turn the thing off, including members of SG-13 and SG-22 who had the gene.

The energy bursts were getting more frequent, which meant that in addition to Jack and his magic gene, they were going to need Earth’s foremost expert on Ancient technology - General Samantha Carter-O’Neill.

“We’re going to be gone for at least a few days,” said Sam, in her full tactical gear, kneeling to be on eye-level with eight-year-old Jake and six-year-old A.J. “But Uncle Daniel and Auntie Vala will be there to look after you.”

A.J. was looking over her mother’s shoulder at the gate, watching with wide brown eyes as it spun, but Jake nodded somberly. “It’s ‘cause you’re generals,” he said. “And you’re in charge. Dad always says that being in charge is a job, not a reward. You can’t make people do things if you won’t do ‘em, too.”

“I do say that,” Jack agreed. He usually meant it in relation to setting the table or washing up before dinner, but he should have known that Jake would make the connection to something like this.

“Will it be scary there?” asked A.J.

Jack’s knees wouldn’t appreciate kneeling on the Gate Room floor, but he did it anyway, taking both of A.J.’s hands in his own.

“It might be,” he told her. “But I’ll have Mom looking out for me.”

“Watchin’ your six,” A.J. said.

“That’s right,” agreed Sam, getting back to her feet.

Their daughter smiled. “Someday, I’ll be big enough to come with you, Daddy.”

Jack laughed. “I’ll be much too old by then. But I can’t wait to see it.”

A.J. hugged him. “I know you have to go,” she said, softly, as she reluctantly let go.

“I shall also look out for your father, Amanda-O’Neill.”

Teal’c had appeared in the Gate Room doorway, and came over to help Jack back to his feet.

“Thanks, T. See, kids? Uncle Teal’c has got it covered.”

“Indeed,” he agreed.

“Okay,” said A.J., and moved to stand beside her brother. “Be careful.”

“Godspeed,” added Jake.

His parents shared a proud smile, and Teal’c said, “General-Hammond could not have said it better, Jacob-O’Neill. Now, are we prepared?”

“We’re prepared,” said Jack. He smiled at the kids again, then reached out to take Sam’s hand, just because he could. “And we’ll be back for bedtime.”

“Yours or theirs?” Sam asked, and she was still smiling when they stepped through the wormhole.
