Some Assembly Required

“I love you,” said Jack, with feeling.

Sam looked up from the tiny tricycle she was assembling, then smiled. “That’s good to know. Any particular reason?”

“No,” he said. “Just all the usual reasons. You don’t happen to need this piece, do you?”

“I need all of the pieces,” she said, taking the oddly-shaped bit of metal and setting it in a specific place among all the others already laid out on the dining room table. “I’m almost finished. Is everything else ready?”

Jack glanced at their Christmas tree, twinkling merrily in the dim living room. There were dozens of presents underneath - toys and games, to go with the trike, for three-year-old Jake, and mostly clothes and necessities for almost-one-year-old A.J. The stockings were hung on the mantle, full of goodies, including one for Teal’c, who would be joining them later that afternoon. A turkey was thawing in the refrigerator, next to the dishes Jack had made ahead of time. More ingredients sat on the kitchen counter, ready for the dishes he still had to make.

“I think we’re ready,” he said, turning back. “Except for the-”

A moment ago, the dining room table had been covered in tiny metal and plastic parts, but now a gleaming red tricycle stood on the towel Sam had put down.

“Have I mentioned that I love you?” said Jack.

Sam laughed. “It came with instructions,” she said, holding up the booklet. “It’s not that impressive.”

“No, that’s more impressive. Those things are intentionally cryptic. When…” He paused, then continued, “When Charlie was five, I was on leave at Christmas and I built him a bike. I nearly ran out of time - I could hear his little feet thumping down the stairs as I was putting it under the tree.”

“And I’m sure he loved it,” she said, with a soft smile.

“He did.”

Sam stood and pressed a quick kiss to his jaw. “Go put that under the tree, Santa, and I’ll get us some festive drinks.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Jack set the tricycle under the side near the mantle, carefully rearranging the other gifts around it. When he straightened, he found Sam watching him, a bottle of beer in each hand. With a smile, he took both bottles and set them on the mantle, then pulled his wife in for a long, deep kiss.

“I love you.”

Sam grinned. “Rightbackatcha.”
