Stories of Atlantis

Zoe was three before her fathers realized she’d never heard the myth of the Lost City of Atlantis.

Given that she’d been born and grown up in that very city, it seemed surprising at first, until they’d subsequently realized that everyone who lived in or visited Atlantis obviously knew it was real, and never saw a need to comment on the fact that most native earthlings ever believed otherwise.

Until Daniel Jackson arrived, of course.

“So on Earth, they think it’s just a story,” the archaeologist said. “That there’s no such place. Like El Dorado.”

“But that is just a story,” said Zoe. “Daddy told me so when Mommy wanted to watch the movie.”

“Movie?” Daniel repeated, glancing over at John, sitting beside his daughter in Atlantis’s mess hall.

“The Road to El Dorado,” he replied. “It’s a kids’ movie, totally age appropriate.”

“Unlike Spaceballs,” muttered Rodney, from Zoe’s other side.

“That has bad words!” their daughter announced, cheerfully.

“Which you are not to repeat,” John added.

Daniel chose to ignore this entire exchange. “It’s interesting how wide-spread the story is, actually. Civilizations all over the world have very similar versions of the sunken city story, which just shows how far the Ancients travelled after leaving the Pegasus Galaxy.”

“Well,” said John. “We humans do love a good story. Zoe, why don’t you tell Dr. Daniel your favorite story about Atlantis?”

“Okay!” she agreed, and immediately launched into a complicated story that sounded, vaguely, like a very bad ‘whisper down the lane’ version of the expedition raising the city for the first time.

While Daniel listened, apparently able to follow at least part of Zoe’s three-year-old rambling, Rodney leaned his shoulder against John’s.

“Did you think when we got here,” he said, “and raised a ten-thousand-year-old city from the ocean, that we would one day let our daughter be corrupted by an archaeologist?”

John laughed. “I think it’s the other way around.”

“And that’s how come ‘Lantis is the best place in the whole entire universe,” Zoe finished.

“Hmm,” said Rodney. “I think you’re right.”
