Crossovers

See that icon there? That right leg is going to come across the left on the curve and then the back left will push off. This mechanism of motion helps you get much faster and more graceful speeds around the track. And you know what?

Awesome!

I find with crossovers (on ice skates at any rate) that I'm better in one direction than the other. This is doubly true of quick turns (eg, turning on an inside or outside edge). Not sure if you can do those on roller skates though!

Definitely the case in quads as well. I'm far better at "derby direction" which is always turning to the left. They make us skate the other way sometimes and it always feels weird!

As for stopping, you can stop like that but usually we do what are known as plow stops, t-stops, and turn around toe-stops.
