"D:" has been my favorite emoticon for a while now. ":(" is just sort of sad or disappointed, and variations on ":o" are more shocked or surprised. But "D:", ever since I first saw it, has perfectly expressed everything on the Horror Spectrum, from dismay, to disgust, to ineffable terror. I loves it, precious. Its opposite :D has some range to it. It can be a grin, a really happy look, a laugh, a look of delight, even an empty vacant goofy look to let you know the tone of the previous statement was whimsical or goofy. :D
