So the danger zone around the Dai-ichi plant has increased from 30km to 80km.  Iwaki is in that zone.  Not many people are left in Iwaki, most have left to either Ibaraki prefecture or Toochigi or Tokyo.    I need to talk to my supervisor, but it looks like I may be going back to Canada for a couple of weeks.  I am looking at leaving on Monday and ( Read more... )

No, it hasn't. That's just the radius America wants its citizens to stay out of. The area of exclusion is 20km, which is for evacuation. The additional 10km is to encourage people in that area to stay indoors.

Please, please, watch what you spread. There's more than enough unneeded panic to go around as it is.

That`s what I saw on tv here in Tokyo hun. We`ve been talking about it at my friends house. They are Japanese living in TOkyo. That`s the info we have here now. from Japanese tv.

sorry if it`s not what you are hearing. I think a lot of people everywhere are hearing different things. Can`t help that.

I guarantee, 100%, that the exclusion zone is only 20km, with 10km on top of that for people staying inside. I'm not going to say what you did or didn't see on TV here, but NHK has been saying the same thing for the last 4 days now, and the only mention I've heard of 80km is from America's request to its citizens.

*hugs* Oh Lisa-chan, I know you want to stay in Japan hun, but it's only a few weeks to April 4th! Are they making you leave or is it just a lot of pressure from people here?

pressure from people in ottawa and in Japan. But I am not being made to leave by the Japanese government or anything, some ALTs are staying.

Carleton Japanese Association has raised over $10,000 since Monday to donate to Red Cross. Tomorrow I will also collect in my big classes to help their efforts. Being in Canada is hard, because there is nothing we can do but raise money and watch the NHK and try to read between the lines of media coverage to understand the truth. It's painful, because I a way I feel like Japan is my home too. That's why I sympathized with you Lisa wanting to stay in Japan. I'm glad you left Iwaki at least, because if things don't recover quickly everyone will want to leave and then it might be too late to escape. But if you have to return to Canada, we will welcome you... I will make you Canadian-style chocolate cake as a consolation prize!! Real frosting, no whipped cream!
Just do what you think is best, I support it 100%. <3

I have my plane ticket and will be coming home on Monday.

It`s hard being in Japan too. I can`t really do anything right now to help people as I am just trying to help myself and most people are the same. The people who are most able to help are the ones who are here but aren`t affected by what happened.

Being in canada will almost be a relief because I can just get away from it all and not feel so helpless. As selfish as that is....

Not selfish, just human.
I felt really terrible on the weekend when I found myself thinking, "If there's a silver lining, at least Charlie Sheen isn't on my tv anymore." We look for good news wherever we can. If there's a bright spot in you and other expats temporarily leaving, as awful as it might sound, the less foreigners are there for the next week or two the more the Japanese can focus on looking after their own people. I know they don't grudge us being there at all (especially someone like you, Lisa), so I don't mean to suggest that. Just one of those small positive spins you could put on things???
Spring is coming here in Ottawa. Unfortunately it seems like you might miss the cherry blossoms in Tokyo (I saw a picture that some in Ueno are already blooming), but try to enjoy them till Monday. The weather here will hopefully hold, too, and you can have a nice relaxing visit with everyone. I have exams on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I'd like to see you, if it's possible. Let me know if you need my mobile number again :)
