Excited but Apprehensive

My husband and I just jumped on a chance to go to Uruguay for seven months. We are both self-employed, so it's relatively easy to walk away from our jobs. We're not locked into a lease. The timing is impeccable ( Read more... )

question, uruguay

Hello there, and WOW, congratulations!

In my experience, I decided to emigrate to the UK semi-permanently (I ended up being there for 2.5 years and only returned to the US because of visa issues) and my were surprised, but thrilled for me. They were sad to see me go, but understood that it was an exciting opportunity for me and were very supportive. Plus, it gave them an opportunity to come and visit. XD

And you are not being unreasonable AT ALL in being so excited. :D It is an amazing thing for y'all and will be a great experience. Embrace the excitement. :D

Thanks!
I just told my parents last night, and they didn't seem to get past "surprised" and into "excited" territory, but I'll give them a few days. And so far, people have been either confused or excited, so I guess that's not so bad :)

The first time we moved to Germany, the 6 months before were like alittle bit of hell mixed with very high excitement level. My husband gave notice at his job and off he went, but I couldn't go for another 6 months. I had to keep working until 3 months went by (couldn't talk about it, couldn't be excited about it, very hard), then I gave notice and they were flabergasted. How can you do this to us? they moaned. TS, I thought. Then I had 3 months to sell stuff, arrange to ship stuff, etc. The last week was exceptionally difficult, trying to sell the car at the last minute so I could keep driving around doing all the important errands (change will, change PO, change bank address, and and and). Good God. It was probably the hardest 3 months of my life ( ... )

Thank you so, so much. It seemed wrong to be anything but excited for this, but it's not all a picnic, as you well know!

Once I told my workplace yesterday, I felt a lot better.

And thankfully, we are moving to a two-bedroom, so maybe we'll be able to entice visitors!

I am the worst one to give any advice-- I have done this to friends and family so, so, so many times... and been so out of my head with the moving stresses that I had not a bit of energy to spare to think about what they might need. But looking back I do think goodbye parties help a lot. Give people a formal opportunity to celebrate with you and say goodbye for now. Work with someone to host a get-together for you.

Seven months is nothing, really. It shouldn't be that big of a deal.
