Have you considered the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England.

Just a vote for my own alma mater and town. Nice size, not too big. Good size GLBT community including a really wicked local club scene.

Just a thought. I went for a year abroad there in 2000...and never left LOL.

If not, England vs. Scotland I'd say England, but I'm very biast.

The University of Sussex is near Brighton, right? Because Brighton is like the gay capital of England and probably of the UK. In general, I find that England is more liberal than the US when it comes to sexuality. Also, from what I hear, Brighton is a lot of fun and there's a lot more to do there than bar hop.

St Andrews has all of that except the non-drinking-related social scene. It's perfectly possible to not drink at all/much while there but most socialising goes on either at pubs or at house parties. It's a smallish town - three main streets, if you live farther than ten minutes from the centre of town it's as if you're on the moon - there's a couple of really good hiking/camping/outdoors stuff societies, and an active GLBT society ( ... )

Couple more:

What are the dorms like? Are they self-service or do you have to be on a meal plan? Is the campus vegetarian/vegan friendly? Do you think it would be easy for people studying abroad to make friends?

Thanks so much for your input, it helps a lot! It's hard figuring out where to go when I can't actually visit!

The dorms (or 'halls' as they're known) vary really widely. There are some in historic buildings in the center of town (all of these are on full meal plans as I recall, although kitchens are available) and some are newer (read: ugly concrete) at the edge of town (still only about a 15 minute walk or so) and some of these you can be on a partial or no meal plan - some are more like apartments than dorms. Check out thesinner.net for guides to the individual halls (as well as the town in general ( ... )

I go to st andrews and love it. That being said the only one I would reccomend NOT going to is Stirling as that is a tiny town with nothing in it. St Andrews is small, but there´s a big social life there. Theres lots going on and you´re sure to find a group that fits you. Like astronomy society, awesome. Hispanic society- best thing ever...
If you have questions about st a im here.
