Four Color Heroes

I got hooked on comic books at a young age. My father is to blame for that.

Unlike many of his peers, he didn't throw away (or have thrown away) all of his old comic books. There weren't many, just a couple dozen issues of Detective Comics, Superman, Batman and a handful of other random titles. Most of them were DC comics, there were only (if I ( Read more... )

Comics. Yum. :)

And the continuity gets you hooked doesn't it?

My latest addiction is Brian Michael Bendis. That includes Daredevil, Alias, Ultimate Spiderman... On the nonsuperhero side, I read Jason Lutes' Jar of Fools the other night. Will have to read Berlin. His writing reminds me of Ed Brubaker (they actually collaborated on something before). Very low-key but well-plotted and poignant stories. OK...I can go on forever! Here's a link to a friend's entry that might interest you. Not so sure how I felt about the take of some people in the article though...a little condescending, even if they were in support of comics in education: http://www.livejournal.com/users/mtvs/13032.html

PS. WATCHMEN is one of my all-time faves. Hope they get the movie right.

See, I'm about a decade out of the comics loop.

I stopped buying stuff back in '94 or '95 (when Marvel completely did away with all of the continuity I loved them for). That and I ran out of time to read them.

Up until that point, I was spending over $100 a month on comics (and that's with no double buying... I bought to read and enjoy, not to horde and collect).

Of course, since everyone else was buying multiple copies of issues, my collection is barely worth what I paid for it (if even). I keep thinking I should start buying collections I see for sale, taking what I don't have, and burning the rest. That way, eventually, mine will be worth more. :)

And yeah, comics have been underrated and demonized for too many years. Granted, some deserve that--but most don't.

One of these days, I'll get back into the loop full on. Or, just maybe, I'll get my own stuff jump-started (now that I know all these artists and stuff...)

(I hope all the comic book movies they make they get right.)
