gah... stupid reality...

joekerstef pointed out to me earlier today that I may have a small problem with the apartment complex I'm looking it. I double checked and, sure 'nuff, she's right.

While the bus coverage there is, like, five times better than the bus coverage where I am now, I still wouldn't be able to get home if I'm out anywhen even resembling "late"--even on weekends. ( Read more... )

*checks*

Nope. Not on the list of acceptable pets. They don't even allow Great Danes. :P

(Plus horses are more expensive than cars, man.)

I doubt cab rides are that expensive. Especially considering that you don't have the expense of a car.

I'm actually trying to track down that info right now.

(Mainly because looking for apartments in my price range just depresses me.)

The other night I was out around 9pm and was thoroughly fascinated to have discovered where the taxi line for Germantown is. I thought, wow, even Germantown has a taxi line where a large number of bus lines converge.

The last bus leaves the Pentagon to head down Columbia Pike at 3:30am on Fridays and Saturdays, and goes as far as Carlyn Springs Road & the environs. My street has some of the best bus service available in the metro area outside DC. I don't know what your budget is, but the Pike is a whole hell of a lot less expensive than most of North Arlington. The seedier-looking complexes have one-bedrooms for around $900/mo (but I'd expect they have the same problems as your current complex). My large one-bedroom is less than $1200/mo, but I'm not sure what new tenants are paying.

Craigslist also turns up a few English Basements within walking distance to Metro for *way* less than apartments.

Yeah... I've thought about VA. But then I remember how unhappy I was with the commute when I was working down at Crystal City for that month.

Apparently while I travel very well, I do not commute that well. I worry that much more than a month of that kind of crazy would leave me totally frazzled.

At least that's how it looks right now. May change over time and as options fade...

Are you looking to live by yourself, or willing to live with a few other people? I used to see a LOT of ads on Craigslist for people renting out their basements for like $600/month. I know it's probably not ideal, but if you could find one that's pretty close to a metro it might be worth it...?

Preferring to live by myself.

Should probably have a roommate or seven.

But I absolutely refuse to live with random people. I burned up all my random roommate good luck in college.

My two big issues are space and metro accessibility. (Space being the more limiting of the two when you really get down to it.)

Also, not moving into DC proper. Don't want to live in the city.

I've checked a bunch of those CL ads out via HousingMaps.com (which is really neat when it comes to figuring out just where the heck those things are).

So, yeah, I'm definitely causing all my own problems here.

I completely understand, I've never liked living with strangers either.

It's good to have friends who care and help think about these logistics.
