this is one of those moments you are thankful that you don't own your own home - the landlord has to deal with the problem (even if s/he does it incompetently)!
If I did own my own home, this particular problem wouldn't happen. This is from the washing machine of the upstairs tenant. There's no pipes in the ceiling (as far as I can tell, just about all the pipes run through the walls and connect to the main line below me).
And even if it was pipes, I'd have fixed it right the first time (or gotten someone to fix it right) and it wouldn't happen again for at least a decade or so.
I don't mind dealing with problems. I just can't stand incompetent people not dealing with problems that could be fixed easily.
Sorry to hear about your waterfall. Renting sucks. My husband and I have rented, owned, rented again, owned again. If you have a good landlord youre ok, but if you dont forget it....the other side of the coin is when you own...you have to pay to fix everything!!! I guess you get screwed either way. Good luck, hope your personal effects didnt get ruined.
Yeah, but at least if I were paying to get it fixed to my specifications, it would be done right the first time.
I have no problem fixing things... I grew up in a house in the woods that was constantly developing new problems. I know enough about tools and basic repair work that I could fix every problem I've ever had in this place--in the space of a day for the most complex and in minutes for the least complex.
And, no, nothing got ruined. I had moved everything that got even vaguely wet the last time this happened--back in April.
But at least it's not constant. If it had been a pipe or something, I would have called the emergency maintenance number. But it was something I knew would run its course shortly. Technically, it's not a leak, I suppose... it's more a reoccurring problem caused by human error or mechanical failure on the part of the washing machine upstairs.
If I had just called maintenance, it would have been another round of "fixing it" by painting over the water damage... just like they did last time they "fixed" it.
