Holiday -- that is to say "Food" -- Report

Jul 05, 2008 10:13

So glad we did not try to go to the big fireworks display. Watching it on TV everything looked rainy and miserable. We did see an unexpected live display somewhere a few blocks north of us while the Macy's show was on. I still can't figure out where it was from, exactly. We had seen lovely live fireworks after the symphony concert in Central Park ( Read more... )

Oh, I've never eaten potato salad with bacon or pork in it. It sounds interesting. And the pulled pork sounds amazing. We're all sick with colds here so celebrating was limited to orange juice and chicken soup. ;D

I believe that bacon and its other porky cousins make all savory foods happier. And the pulled pork went beyond my expectations, for sure. I have done a lot of things in BBQ sauce in the crockpot. I think people associate the crock pot with wintry soups and stews, but it's actually very nice for summer cooking because it doesn't heat up the kitchen. You can pretty much dump in any kind of meat with an onion and the sauce and make a pretty good easy dinner with some corn muffins and a vegetable.

Summer colds are so miserable -- I hope you're all feeling better soon.

Sounds like an excellent picnic! I like your idea of mixing the sauces for the pulled pork; I think I'll try that the next time I make that dish. (Dunno if my cuts of pork are as nice as yours, but they always come out well, so perhaps it's best not to ponder too thoroughly WHAT they are, exactly.)

Sorry to hear about the walnut situation- my dad's allergic to them, too- but hey, making another peach pie to enjoy amidst all the domestic bliss sounds mighty nice.

I'd have loved to have seen that exhibit. You lucky New Yorkers, you.

I managed to use up a lot of odds and ends of condiments on this meal. The BBQ sauce I had was just too sweet and insipid, but I hate to just pitch stuff like that out without trying to fix it up. I have been in a sort of renaissance of A-1 sauce since I stayed with Leit after his surgery. His roommate had a big bottle and I used it in a meatloaf that came out really delish, so I bought some when I got home and have been playing with it since. The sri-racha is Leit's contribution. I've always been a bit afraid of its being to intense, but I have been enjoying it in combinations. It mixes a lot more easily than Chinese chili paste, and it tastes almost as neutral.

And yes, things like the book exhibit remind me why I love living here!

Yay for happy holidays! I'm glad to hear that Leit got his allergic reaction under control quickly so that you could both enjoy yourselves.

It really is the sort of thing that makes me love living here. Not only is it easy to run over and see exhibits like that, it's easy to back and see them again if you really like them. I R spoiled.

Boo for hidden walnuts. That's just not fair. I'm sure he'll be happy to get a Replacement Pie. :-)

And I know I should be swooning over the pulled pork, which sounds AMAZING, but right now I'd rather eat that potato salad! I adore good potato sala and that sounds truly delicious!!

And I love the pic-pic pic. :-)!!

It all came out pretty yummy. Perhaps you guys can join us when we have a do-over pic-pic. I was remembering what a nice time I had with you on the Fourth last year. Now that we have the car, we want to make a beach trip to LI, but the weather has not been very cooperative. When we do, I hope we can get together. I'll bring potato salad and pie if you'll pick up the Zorn's.

I share your opinion of raw onions. I always ignore instructions to add them in recipes. Who likes that kind of strong flavor suddenly intruding on their food? Not me.

People of fine sensibilities agree: raw fish is good, raw onions are unnecessary!
