You know what I find to be true? Sometimes people are kind and beautiful to one another and sometimes they are just TERRIBLE to one another -- lashing out because of personal insecurities or needs of power. Kids do this but I think they learn it from the adults in their lives. I never doubt one key lesson I learned at Hollins and at Mitton (C4K): Positivity breeds more positivity and hate breeds more hate. It's a deep truth, something I try to remind myself. Hate is learned, just as generosity is. I don't think it has to do with any one characteristic or preference or life decision or love interest. Hate breeds hate.
