About five years ago I got a DVD player for my birthday, and it has finally died. It did interesting things while it was dying - for a while there, every now and then when I hit pause, the screen would divide into 9 tiny pictures and keep moving. Which was cool, but somewhat inconvenient.

Anyway, about three or four years ago I got a DVD burner ( Read more... )

A new DVD player in the boonies? Amazon.com is your friend. Make sure you get a region-free and then you can play Brit dramas as well. And it doesn't cost that much more.

Ooh aah. What a fabulous idea! Just before I read this, I was looking for Keith Floyd DVD's - one of our absolute favorite travel/cooking shows - but they're only out in PAL. With a region-free player, this wouldn't be a problem, and I'm amazed at how inexpensive (less than $100) the region-free players are! Yay! Thanks for the terrific idea!

*nod nod* Good idea! That was why I wanted my poor dead burner (except not region-free). I guess the technology wasn't quite ready. I also have some laserdiscs I'd like to burn onto DVD.

I hate it when technology starts breaking down, but it's so handy that you kept the burner and that it will still play! Yay!

Hope you get a new DVD player soon.

Thanks!

I have to get the furnace cleaned, too, one of these days! It's not a big deal. The temperature is going to be in the mid-70's - um, what is that Celsius? - 20something - for the next week, so there's no hurry.
