Even in gen vids, a significant part of the enjoyment for me is seeing how the vidder maps the lyrics onto the clips, and especially how the vidder creates a tension between what was originally happening in the scene from which the clip is taken, and how the clip is being recontextualized to fit into the vid.
Yes. That recontextualization is what makes vidding so fascinating. Sometimes it's so easy to think about the scene in context and then you're wondering what's going on behind that moment, and that's what I love about slashing in general. I totally agree with you that having canon ships takes a little something out of the vid. (I mean, I'm not going to complain about having a canon ship, but I get what you're saying.)
Ooh! I love your analysis, even though I am scarcely familiar with vidding and with the current shows. (For example, I know that Supernatural features two brothers who are shipped, and Hannibal is about Hannibal Lector's actions before the Law got him (I think) but I have never watched them.) Nevertheless, I have enjoyed the vids I have seen in the past, for the construction aspects of them, even when I wasn't knowledgeable about their subjects.
I'm happy to see my dear friend having a great time! *hug*

Thanks for your thoughtful report on the vid contest. You always have such great insight into the inner meanings of our vids and you usually have a view that I hadn't considered before. Just as an FYI, I didn't say the right thing about the vid "Worth the Price" at the con. The vidder wanted us to pay attention to the 'first' names on the tombstones. They were all the same as characters in SG-1 (George, Jack, Daniel, Oma). Jamie
