I'm still holding out hope. And there have been a couple of good moments (though granted, those moments are in homage to the original series).

With the entire thing, now that the season is over, I've wondered if they're leading up to that with season two. And I've started reading the comic.

It seems to me that Republic City is founded with only benders in mind, and that both Aang and Zuko overlooked the non-Benders. THis may explain the formation of the council. I hope that season two will address this inequity (and I'm also holding out hope for a council seat for Asami, who deserves better than Mako, because he's such a wishy-washy young goat when it comes to girlfriends).

A series set between the two would have been so much better, leading up to this. I'm hoping the comic addresses a few of those gaps. It's a shame they couldn't get it animated, though, because there are some people who, alas, do not read comics-Not me, I like comics!but they do exist.

Ken, you wonderful, wonderful person. Thank you for stating so perfectly what I could not. Tumblr is actively (and in the case of some people, more than likely literally) shitting itself with excitement over a series that, compared to its predecessor, falls woefully short. The pro-bending plotline is one of the saddest attempts at guaranteed action in a series already based in martial arts-style action than I thought possible, and centering so many episodes around it has made for a dull story. The central conflict, which you explained beautifully in your post, touches on deeper and more complicated issues that more closely resemble those in ATLA, issues that you can understand from both sides and make you think about where you really stand. But instead of making those problems the central conflicts, they have been shoved aside and only come to the forefront when pro-bending can literally no longer exist due to Amon's attack on the stadium ( ... )

Aww, thank you!

I didn't even think about pro-bending when I was making this (brushed off most of my indifference towards it as symptomatic of my indifference towards sports in general) but you're totally right. They have this amazing, deep, grey conflict that they're shoving aside for the sake of sportsball.

Thanks for doing your write-up in the first place! Made me feel much less alone in the world. Especially glad that someone besides me noticed that we know almost nothing about Republic City and the rest of the world from the show.
