It's all about how to teach different subjects, classroom organization and management, educataional pyschology and socio-cultural issues that arise in public schools. There's actually plenty that I don't already know about!

I'm also curious about the content of the curriculum--how much is educational method and how much is other stuff like, say, how to teach a class where you're reading the textbook ahead of the students. ;) Do you wish you were taking the three semesters at the normal rate?
Sounds a little scary, living in San Jose with income from only one day a week between the two of you. I hope you've got a good deal on your living arrangement. Good luck, Olin, finding your calling!
My friend Matt began substitute teaching recently. I'm looking forward to hearing about his experiences; I wonder if they're much like yours.

All of the subject-matter content is supposed to be mastered before entering the teacher preparation course. I took a test that supposedly proved my efficiency in all of the subject matter. Now all the classes are about educational psychology, classroom management, constructing lesson plans, assessment, socio-cultural issues and other teaching strategies. I have four curriculum classes in which we study how to teach specific subjects (math, literacy, science and social studies).
Money isn't really a problem yet. I've got some loans out. Next semester will be more worrisome because I am supposed to student teach every day and won't be able to work. I am looking into the prospect of becoming an intern, which would mean I would basically be teaching on some sort of provisional license while I finish my student teaching and coursework requirements (I would then be paid). I'm not sure if it is possible yet or not...

Congrats on you (and eventually Olin) finding work that you love. That's harder than it sounds.
