Congratulate me! I have succeeded in watching the first disc of North and South!  *round of applause and deep sighs of relief all around* I know, I know, you've all been dreadfully bored hearing me rant and rave all the time about my quest to find and read the book and get and watch the film. However, you will notice that I said the FIRST disc.  ( Read more... )

I read this book about a year ago (loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!) and now you've made me really want to see the movie. I didn't know there even was a movie until you mentioned it, so thanks. :)

Oooh, ooh, ooh! So glad I've provided this particular service! Movie is so good.:D I'm actually suprised that you've never heard of it-so many lj users that I know of love it, in fact that's how I found out about it. It's a really really popular period drama(I've got some of its fan sites in my links)in fact some people think it's as good as Pride and Prejudice. I don't agree with that-P&P will always be the best-but's it's still QUITE, QUITE lovely. And yes, I absolutely adored the book too.:D I just read it about two weeks ago, driven to it by the fact that I'd heard so much about the movie that I wanted to watch it but was absolutely not going to without reading the book first. It was so good :D Be warned that they do, of course, change some things in the movie-a lot of the timeline is rushed and like I said in my post I think her parents are miscast-but other than that it's all good. Especially Thornton. :D

Oh, she does, I assure you...:D They absolutely COULDN'T get rid of that scene. So far it's my second favorite scene.

So the gushing has begun, huh?

The Hales, Margaret's parents if you recall are not sympathetic to begin with in the novel. I think the actors did a great job!

Her mother isn't sympathetic, that's true, but I really liked her father in the novel! He's just so sweet. And the way their relationship is portrayed is lovely. I feel like all of that is gone in the movie.

I loved the part in the book where Mr. Hale uses Margaret's fingers as tongs for the sugar to put into his tea.

I never warmed up to the dad. He played Merrick in "The Jewel in the Crown" (Masterpiece Theatre from a while ago I got at the library) and was very bad. Sort of ruined me for life. For some reason, the lady that played Margaret took a while for me to warm up to *ducks* Sorry! There was just something about her . . .

No, actually I know what you mean-I expected to like her because I'd liked what I'd seen of her in the previews, but like you it's taken me a while. And I'm still not sure I absolutely adore her-I know, gasp, shock, horror. I'm just really picky with my female actresses, that's all. But yeah-I just don't like that actor that plays her dad at all.

eep! yay! at least you finished the first one. it just makes the wait worth it :D hehe and yes isn't his voice just *dies* LoL i always fall for the deep, rich kind of voices *sigh* it makes a girl fall victim to giddiness and mush :) i actually don't really mind her parents. i thought they played their part well and while her mother seemed a bit like a cold bitch, it just adds to the whole storyline ^_^

Yes-I suspected that the second episode is much better. I'm waiting for impatiently at the moment. :D And I agree-it's such a lovely idea to have a male hero that got where he is, to this position of wealth and respect, by his own efforts and not by inheriting his wealth. He's just really to die for over all. And while I may not consider the book one of the most well-written I've ever read, it's still SOO lovely-her writing style is just gorgeous. And by the way, welcome! :D :D Very glad to have you around-I've always admired your icons. (Wasn't it you who made an absolutely GORGEOUS batch of Oscar and Lucinda icons a while back? I stole many)
