Elizabeth Barrett Browning
(In which I go into biographical mode)
Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one of my favorite poets. I'm sure most of you already know her story, but for those who don't, it's one of the most romantic real-life stories ever enacted on the real stage. For most of her life she led a lonely, introverted existence much like Emily ( Read more... )

I hate to say this, but I had a teacher who ruined poetry for me. I have a very hard time reading it without getting intense feelings of anger & embaressment.

...but, I do like what I read above.

Oh, that is so sad! Seriously, that almost makes me deppresed because I read poetry a lot and love it and it adds so much depth and warmth to my life. I do understand though-when you have an intense bad experience it stays with you forever and whatever triggered it remains tainted. But I am still so sorry...maybe you could try just reading one poem every once in a while and see if the feelings gradually subside. But, anyway^_^ glad that you like this poetry at least.
p.s-I want to murder your teacher slowly-not just for ruining something lovely for you but for making you feel that way in the first place. Grrr!

Ha ha. That's funny! Although on second thought it could actually have some validity-or not considering that he actually forbade every single one of his children from getting married, at least that's what I just read. So it can't hold much weight unless he had incestuous feelings for ALL his children. Of course he could have just had MORE for her...ugh. Let's get off this train of thought.

Exactly! I agree with both of you-it's funny I've thought that too, darksilvermoon, she's like a passionate Emily Dickinson writing about love instead of death, nature, and the small things that Emily Dickinson does. But at least she got acclaim in her lifetime if not now-the irony is that while she lived she was much more famous than her husband, it was only after she died that he really came into his own as a poet.
