I pretty much agree with you about GPSs. I do have one, and I have used it to get to new places. Though much of the time I end up taking a better route than the GPS tells me anyway, unless I'm waaaaaay out of my familiar territory, which is rare.

After messing around with a bunch of voices, I switched back to one of the defaults. I want my directions clear, concise, and to the point, without the witty jokes that get repeated every time you make a right turn or whatever. I did choose a female voice over a male, though - mainly due to research with fighter pilots that shows they respond to a female voice better than a male voice. :) That's why the Eurofighter, among others, gives pilots vocal commands in a female voice. If it's good enough for them, it works for me.

What is your relation to fighter pilots? Is it more than a game?

What if your default chick sounded like Isabella Rossellini? Would you search for something more monotone? Less accent?

I've never used GPS. I've just heard stories. I was mainly curious about what kind of voice you like. Celebreties seems like a better way to define a preference than, I dunno, advectives.

If I had GPS I would use it when I went to obscure places. That happens to me maybe 4 or 5 times a year. But even still, if a road is beyond Thomas Guide page "B", I am given directions.

I figured they could find enough sound clips of him to make the GPS opperate clearly.
