Room 313 and Front Lawn, Saturday Morning

Mar 29, 2008 07:41

Inara woke early and toddled over to the window, climbing up on the desk so she could move the covering out of the way. Trees, sunshine, grass, oooh, birds!

"Oooh, pretty."

That settled it. Today was an outside day.

Once she climbed down, she went to get dressed, and was most displeased by what she found in her closet. Why were they all ( Read more... )

"Don'-- don'-- stop pulling on me!"

A tiny boy was being dragged out onto the lawn by a... sizeable puppy. He was shouting quite loudly with a very heavy Welsh accent. "Stooop iiiit! There'll be tripping! Mum hates tripping! It's really really weird!"

Inara stopped what she was doing, which left her hanging to a branch and her feet planted against the trunk of the tree.

"'m not gonna trip, and not weird! It's a tree," she called back to him over her shoulder.

"You don' know," Jeff mumbled, and proceeded to efficiently lose a sleeve to the dog, who started skipping around in circles with it. He would've gazed mournfully after it, but he was a little distracted.

He'd notice the missing sleeve in an hour or three, maybe. "There's always trippin'. 'specially in trees 'cos they've got weird shapes." Pause. "Not 'cos you got a weird shape but there's a tree an' it's a tree."

Inara landed on her feet with a thump and turned to face Jeff, hands on her hips. "You got a weird shape, and trees are for climbing. My mama said."

No she hadn't.

Jeff scuffled his feet against the ground. "I know I's got a weird shape 'cos my mum said it but trees do too. 'Cos they've got heads." He didn't sound completely sure about it; in fact, he seemed to shrink a little as he said it.

"Trees got heads?" She peeked over at the tree, then back at Jeff, who didn't really have a weird shape and now she felt bad. "You got fun hair."

"Trees got heads," Jeff repeated, and made a sort of round shape with his hands. "With hair." The round shape was taking place mostly around his own head. "'Cept they've only got one leg."

So now she had to back up to see this, because it sounded like Jeff knew what he was talking about.

She squinted for a bit and tilted her head. "Ohhhhh. Where d'you think his other leg went?"

Jeff tilted his head, too. Mostly just because she was doing it. He wasn't completely sure why. "...I dunno," he mumbled, thinking on the whole matter, "...maybe someone took it for a wooden leg..."

Inara's eyes were extremely wide by this point. "Like a giant?"

"With one leg," Jeff confirmed, shrinking a little more. "...what if he sees you've been climbin' on his leg?" Fear, he could do. Very well.

"I'm not climbing on his leg, I'm climbing on his non-leg. Non-legs are okay to climb," she explained, now worried about this kind of thing, but not wanting to show it.

"You don' know it's his non-leg," Jeff returned, and he was creeping back a few steps. "What if it's his mum's?"

"How come she's not using it?" Inara tilted her head back, but all she saw was sky.

"Maybe she's at a meat-ing," Jeff offered, a little nervously. "Mum goes to meat-ings a lot..."

"Does she take her legs with her?"
