My life, I swear. If it were a
TV Trope, my life would be
Reality is Unrealistic.
I had a job interview today. A big one, for an unspecified non-profit that I very much want to work for. It was perfect on paper. Everything I've been paid to do in my professional career, up to and including the last two temp jobs I've had, has helped me build the skill set needed for this position. I prepared for this one. I spoke with career counselors, and bought books on how to improve your interview skills. I took notes and crammed answers for possible questions. I dressed for success and made all the necessary arrangements so I could get away from the office for a few hours and still have my work covered.
And then I tried to leave. Mother Nature had other plans.
See, the parking lot... it
kinda floods.
To make a long story short, there are two ways to reach the only exit. I tried to go one way, saw the water was up over the curb, and tried to go the other way (where I had actually seen cars drive not long before). It turned out to be deeper than it looked--I got about halfway through before the car died. Even though I'd ruined my shoes getting to the car in the first place, I elected not to venture out into the water lapping at the sides of the car and to stay inside as I called my placement agency and THAT'S when I noticed the car was filling up with water.
So, as you might imagine, I did NOT have my job interview today after all.
Fortunately, the one thing I like about my current temp job (aside from the ridiculously good pay) is that my coworkers are mostly Good People. They saw me get stuck, and a team was mobilized to get me to higher ground before more than about 4 inches or so could get in. And people were pretty supportive as I dealt with the clusterfuck that was dealing with roadside assistance, insurance companies, rental cars and stubborn guards who don't let tow trucks onto the Navy Yard.
And I haven't even told you the best part. Remember that
little accident I had in February? Yeah, this wasn't even my car. It was our car--my husband and I decided to become a one-car family, so it was technically his car that drowned. We're fucked.
At least my job interview is supposedly being rescheduled. :-/
