Twin Peaks fic: The Magnificent Tree [Cooper & Albert]

Aug 09, 2010 21:12

So I have a new layout! New colors! New fonts!
(New location of icons! Still not used to having them on the top left of a post. *squints*)

This calls for fic to celebrate!

For once, I tried my hand at something I don't often do: fluff! Well, not pure fluff, and prossibly not even fluffy fluff, as fluff goes, but... You know. Still a lot ( Read more... )

twin peaks, dale cooper, fanfic, albert rosenfield

More! More! Ahhhh, this is so lovely. Cooper's Diane voice is spot-on and I really enjoyed Albert's internal monologue.

Thank you! *bounces* 'Channeling' Cooper was so much fun, and of course Albert is always a sweetie (deep down, I mean. Deep, deep down, but it's always fun to bring it closer to the surface. *g*)

I've been wanting to ask - that icon of yours, is that from Howl's Moving Castle (or some other Miyazaki film)? I really have the feeling I've seen it before, but I couldn't tell from where. :)

Albert is always a sweetie (deep down, I mean. Deep, deep down Personal canon!!

Got it in one! It's Calcifer, the demon who gets trapped by Howl.

Oh, but this was fun! Funny, surreal, awkward as all hell, and really fabulous. I agree with the previous poster that you nailed Cooper's Dictaphone voice, and Albert's reports were very funny.

The revelations about their respective families definitely elevated this above simple fluff, giving it melancholy undertones I really appreciated. I love pre-canon case fics, even when the case isn't the focus, and this more than delivered. Thanks!

Thank you! I don't often write humor, definitely don't do a lot of fluff (angst addict, y'know :) ) so writing this one was a pretty wild leap for me. I'm thrilled to hear you think it turned out well, and that you enjoyed the bits of angst I threw in there. I get you entirely - I also like my fluff just a little awkward and/or painful, and this was a bit of both. Incidentally, while I made up the bits about Albert's family, the story about Cooper's mother is actually (semi-)canon, in the sense it's mentioned in one of the TP novels (Coop's autobiography, 'My Life, My Tapes'). Seems that poor Dale's childhood was at least as screwed up as his adulthood. Personally, between the two of them, I'd be voting for Albert as the least screwed up.

Doing case fic where the focus would be on the case itself would require, you know, plotting. *g* Which I don't often have the discipline for (except when I'm really obsessed by a fic, like with the long post-finale one) so I'm glad you like the less-plot-heavy kind as well.

Wow, what a great read to come home to!

I love your Dale 'recorder voice'. You do it as well as DMarley who has always been my gold standard in this department. :D

The adventure is awesome. Poor Albert, he's the last person who would deal with being dosed. You did a great job showing how pissed he was beneath the 'whoa'.

Love the references to My Life, My Tapes. Such an underrated addition to the 'canon', so creepy and fantastic. Dale's early life always filled me with dread and it shows why here.

Again, a triumph!!!!! :D :D :D

Hey, welcome back! Hope you managed to catch up on some sleep - I'll never understand how holidays can leave one more tired than before one left, but they always seem to be doing that, don't they? *nods sympathetically*

I love DMarley's Dale and Albert voices - in fact, I strongly suspect it was re-reading her 'Secret Tapes/Private Letters' series that made me stop and think "I need to write me some fluff NOW." :) I think, consciously or subconsciously, I even ended up trying to mimic her style. (And inserted the writing to granny reference, of course. I couldn't help myself. :)) So thanks, that's a lovely compliment ( ... )

I'd love to picture Diane's face when she listens to this, if I only knew what she looked like. The snake part is priceless. A very funny read, with just a little bit of darkness at the edge to prevent it from being too sweet. Il like it. A lot.

I suppose I should now mention that your Cooper's Diane voice is flawless, like everyone did, because it's true and bears repeating.

Is the "two character get high together" a standard fanfic trope yet? It should be.

Thanks! Writing humor always leaves me a little nervous, to be honest, because it's so personal and I don't get a lot of practice, so I'm glad this one made you smile!

Honestly, I have no idea if Diane ever listens to a word Cooper says on those tapes, but if she does, she has to know more about him than any living person on Earth. :) As for Albert, I'm sure he censored his personal account of the events before handing in his reports to the guys in charge.

Not sure about the "getting high together" specifically, but I figured it had to be, no? cliche_bingo does have a "drugs" tag, I checked. And anyway, I suppose it could still fit under the classic "characters X and Y get stuck in tight spot Z together, while both suffering from affliction A". *g* I love that trope like you can't believe! Best of all, it's inexhaustible. :)

I finally got around to reading some stuff on your rec list and I realize that I only like YOUR cooper/albert.

But, I will ask if you know of any cooper/albert written after coop gets shot(with albert worried or mad or whatever.

*blushes* Wow. I'm flattered. Though there really is great stuff out there, as well! Have you read Coincidence? That's the one story I know of that takes place after Cooper's shooting, and is one of my favorite Twin Peaks fics ever.

Apart from that, fics I'd really recommend would be The Void and the Cloudless Sky (which is gen, but just as I picture both of them), And the Devil Makes Thee (long and plotty and has great characterization) and Wait for You, which I wrote a sequel for. Though of course all of that is very personal, and what works for me may not necessarily work for you as well.
