"Sir," His security chief stepped into Hsu's office and took the seat across from him as he showed Hsu his tablet and the ad that he had found in one of the online papers that frequently advertized for mercenaries and other ventures that might be of interest for the organization. This one was such. "You might want to take a look at this
( ... )
The barman spat on his cloth and picked up another glass to polish, "Which job?" he asked, and his gaze took in the dark recesses in his bar where various folks sat waiting for responses.
He nodded "You'll be wanting the two over there then. Somehow I don't think it's as free as it looks. People have come, people have gone" he picked up another glass and then added "quickly."
Where he was pointing sat two young men, one dark haired the other blonde. Both looked completely out of place in the bar, and kept looking about them nervously. They had obviously tried to dress the part, but failed abysmally. Every now and then one of them would speak and the other would shake his head and point to his watch on his wrist. An old fashioned piece, probably an original from the twentieth century, which indicated money.
"You get that many through here?" Hsu gave the man the code that had been attached the ad and then looked over to the dark corner where the bartender indicated. "It rarely is."
Hsu spent a moment, standing at the bar, studying the two men. Young and a bar like this was clearly a place where they had spent little to no time before. And they certainly did not look the type to be in the business of hiring mercenaries. A fact that aroused his curiosity even further. Signalling his men to stay and watch his back as well as the exits, he walked over and sat down across from them. It was then he noticed the watch the dark haired one was wearing. He had one like it himself, and he had expensive tastes, so there was definitely money here, which was always a good sign.
"As you're still here, it's my guess that I'm not too late to find out what this job is all about." His voice was soft, but clearly it was used to being in authority, and his blue eyes were intense and otherwise unreadable.
The dark haired one looked up first, but it was the blonde one who spoke "You guessed right, it seems you just can't get mercenaries like you used to." he shrugged his shoulders "You want to know more? The offer of passage is genuine, the job has some complications. Some of which could be uh life threatening."
The dark haired one shook his head "Oh way to sell it Pat." he muttered.
But Pat shrugged again "And your way was so much better? Everyone so far has left." he turned back to Hsu "My brother has been trying to pretty it up, I figure it's time to try some straight answers. What do you want to know?"
"It's a seller's market as far as mercenaries are concerned, in these times." Complications, well that didn't surprise him. With a payment that these two were offering, there had to be some catch. "So, whatever job you have in mind has risks, so do most. My men are tough and the best trained that you will find anywhere."
He watched the brief quibble between the two carefully, sizing them up. They both seemed way out of their league. He turned his attention fully onto Pat. "I prefer straight answers. You tell me. What is the exact nature of this job? It must be important, people don't just advertize a way off this place for nothing. Also, define 'life threatening'. I'd guess that those before me found that off-putting, and as good as my men are, I have no intention of sacrificing them unnecessarily. And lastly, what guarantees do you have that I will get paid at mission completion?"
