I read in my local paper today that there is a school, here in Florida, that will be furnishing all of its students with iPads during the 2011-2012 school year. I believe that some of our science classes are getting iPod touches next year and the teachers are getting an iPad. This wouldn't normally tick me off so much, but seriously, our school is pretty much a welfare school. We had to give some of our laptops back to the district because we couldn't afford to keep them and seriously, we're in serious need of rebuilding (our school was built as a senior secondary school that had like, three hundred students and now there's eight hundred of us). It's just .. ridiculous that we can afford to spend money on this kind of technology but can't use the money for better things. At least I won't be there next year. Le sigh.

Exactly.

I mean, I get why iPad's are a good idea. I mean, if the text books are available for download, the students can have them right there instead of the school having to buy them. They can take notes on them. There's study software. All of that jazz.

But... there are so many things that the money could be used on. Why an expensive piece of technology? Why not hire amazing teachers who don't need to rely on the newest techno advancements instead? Or something equally important. It just seems like a waste to me.
