that's b/c you are using the piece of crap that came with vista - it has more effects, but crashes way more and won't use avi

you can:
a) convert your vid files to wmv (dl mediacoder from download.com)
or
b)download wmm 2.6 (also from download.com) and get the ffdshow codec

or you can say suck it and quit

I had this problem; then I downloaded the divx codec here: http://www.divx.com/en/win
and everything was fine.

IF it's of any comfort I gave up one step further down the road when it came to cutting shit together and I didn't have the patience or energy or inclination to try and figure out where to cut a scene, esp not when I realized that one tiny scene is literally only two or so seconds and I'd need LOADS of them for a vid and then I figured suck it, and left it all to the vidders.

Haahahah. Since I consider you to be infinitely more patient than I am, I say that this is a good sign.

The vid I want to do would probably use clips from like, every TW ep, every season. I should have taken that as a sign.

Still...>:(

I know this is completely not useful and very belated: switch to Mac. I started making vids with iMovie - very easy. I'm very sorry- I hate dealing with these kinds of technical difficulties too. If you ever decide to pursue it again, check out foolishpassion.org - a vidding comm - lots of detailed instructions for beginners. That's how I learned to do it.
