1. Gun porn moment: The New Kahr P380. Yeah, small, better for concealed carry, but what about the recoil? The last Kahr I test-drove packed more punch than a .45. And also: The Glock 22 RTF .40. RTF=ROUGH TEXTURE FRAME. I think I might be a little in love. Just a smidge. Glock had to invent a new word for the texture: "polymids". Oh ( Read more... )

The fanon thing - I try an avoid it. Cause usually what it means is some fanfic writer has done something and every other fan fic write says "yeah that works!" when in reality it might or might now when confronted with canon. Plus, sometimes it's just annoying (thinking of certain never used pet names for Jack by Ianto as one example.)

The bangs thing. I've done that. Fortunately, hair grows and they shove to the side pretty well, which gets rid of the I HAVE FRINGE look.

Yeah, but sometimes I fine small things in fanon useable and amusing. Pet never have not ever, nor will they ever, be amusing and or IC.

ummm... there is a pet in Torchwood. Myfanwy (I think I mis-spelled that - sorry.)

And Owen*.

LOL. I meant pet names. I dunno where the second word went.

OWEN! That was one of Janet's favorite days.

Too-short bangs is what happened to me not long ago. They've finally grown out to be what I wanted them to be. Like a month later.

I think my personal fanon things are still somewhat based on canon. I write a slightly psychic Ianto (as per the comment in Doctor Who about Torchwood employees having some psychic training), but it's not like it's something I've ever made a plot point about. Things like Ianto knowing when people are going to acknowledge him, and stuff like that. But I don't go as far as Ianto having perfect recall or anything like that. I think he's just organized.

As a reader, I prefer canon-things, or at least, like above, ideas that come up based on things rooted in canon. I don't like most fanon perceptions of the characters.

Mmmm, omg, I want Indian food now.

Yeah! the eidetic memory! That's fanon!

I think the bangs are growing on me. More than they...you know, are actually growing.

HAY YOU HAVE A FRINGE. I HAVE A FRINGE TOO.

Mine is too long, though.

1. If you write fic, do you ever feel as if you need to go with popular fanon when you write or do you stick to canon as you see it as much as you can?

I stick to canon, pretty much. I like filling in holes in canon most of all, though.

2. As a reader, do you prefer to read fic with familiar fanon content, or do you prefer more canonical fic?

The latter by far. I don't mind fanon, but I like new takes on things.

3. What are some fanon/canon things in your fave fandoms? Which ones do you hold true in your personal fanon canon and which ones make you twitch?

In Torchwood, the fanon/canon things... I can't list everything, but I'm annoyed by woobie!Ianto and some of the Gwen characterization. I do like the fanon view that Jack sleeps very little.

MY FRINGE IS OUT OF CONTROL.

See, I guess when I was thinking of fanon, I wasn't thinking of shit characterization. Crap.

Oh! How adorable! I love the bangs and she is a little charmer. Beautiful - both of you.

Icon ... it's warped and all, but damn me I do like that icon. It makes me feel funny inside.

Aw thank you!

idyll made me that icon in 2003 after my first LJ flamewar. It was my argument for hatesex slash. My argument was not taken with the grain of salt that I had intended, and I ended up tangling with...some LJ wankers of repute. I drag it out to remind me of what happens when I try to get SRSBZNS on the internets.

When I read fanfic (when are you going to post the gender-switch thing 'cause that's the first fanfic I've wanted to read in years!)

{clears throat}

When I read fanfic, I prefer things that fill holes in canon or extend logically out from canon. Fanon annoys me, which is why I no longer go to church. Too much of the Catholic Church teaching as gospel is actually fanon based on geek-monks misogynism and phallic-worship. What doesn't serve the selfish aims of the church hierarchy, that is.

1. The bodyswap is not finished. I will plow into it when this Snarry Games thing is done. :(

2. I agree. I like them when they're little things sometimes, but not overwhelming characterizations, like "Ianto is the bottom". Like I called it the Hub Tub once, and then I saw it start popping up in fics, and that made me giggle.

3. Oh Jesus, Catholic Church. How about that Immaculate conception of Mary that we are all free to either believe in or not, whatever? Look, it's either Immaculate or not. WHICH ONE?

Someone on another list reminded me of the Doctor Who episode Bad Wolf in which Captain Jack got completely naked and still managed to pull out a concealed weapon - a rather large one, too, iirc. I would say that should conclusively prove that he has been the bottom in his time.

jmho.

I don't think anyone would argue that Jack is a switch. I wrote a story that that gun he pulled from his ass in BW was a vibrator the TARDIS gave him.
