Opera and LHC rap

We went to the Opera last night, and saw Verdi's Don Carlo. Magnificent. Absolutely fantastic. Great scenography, full choir, full orchestra (like six double basses), and world class singers. René Pape sung King Felipe, the Spanish king (and father of Don Carlo), and while he's an international opera star and well-known bass, he just didn't ( Read more... )

That has got to be the most pain-free introduction to particle physics I've ever seen! Wo.

And -- I'm right, aren't I? -- was that Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer talking over the final credits???

It is, isn't it? Cool way to get an introduction to LHC (as Brian May called it: Large Hardon Collider...LOL).

I can't recall if I've seen Don Carlo. My husband and I used to go to the opera before we had kids, and occasionally when the kids were small and we could still get a sitter. But it's been ages since I've seen an opera. My favorites were Tosca, Don Giovanni, and Marriage of Figaro. Sounds as if you had a great time.

And I second Alkari's recommendation of Ramey, Hampson, and Hadley. :)

Loved the LHC rap, too!

Hmmm... have I seen Tosca? Don't remember. But I love both on Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro. Strange that. *snorts* We used to have season tickets before we got kids, and finally the kids are old enough that the neighbours (grandparents) are happy to see them to bed when we're off to the opera.

I've made a note of the rec, I need to see if I can find it the next time I'm in Oslo.
