Propagate Confusion: An Anti-War Playlist For the Obama Era

It's not that we in the Nahurriyeh household are not ecstatic about the regime change in Washington DC.  Oh, believe me, we are, in an OMG, I no longer have to plan on getting a job in Montréal, which is good because it is cold as balls there, kind of way.  I'm proud that we managed to elect a president who is smart, thoughtful and shares many of ( Read more... )

OMG! Edddie Izzard! I worship the guy's socks! He is, in my humble opinion the funniest man alive.

Ever heard Earth Opera's The Great American Eagle Tragedy? It's very old and about Vietnam, but an awesome (like lots and lots of hots dogs) protest song.

As for Obama, I'm pleased he's been elected president in your country, it is definitely a step above Bush anyway (Hell, a whole stairway) but as with any politician am waiting to see actions and facts before deiciding if he's worthy or not.

I find it totally impossible to have a conversation without at some point using an Eddie Izzard reference. I actually once had a student named Steve in class start talking about how if there hadn't been a cold war we would all be living on the moon now (he was kinda nuts) and had to immediately go to the computer and play the class "I was DEAD at the time! I was on the moon! With Steve!"

That's exactly it--he's much better than the alternatives, both prior or contemporary, but he's strongly limited by the political system and conditions. He's not a miracle worker, and we shouldn't expect miracles anyway.

Wow, excellent song choices. I also love 'People Have The Power' by Patti Smith.

The mix looks cracking, and I quite agree with the sentiment- the levels of adulation given to Obama are beginning to disturb me (particularly on this side of the pond, where we ought to know better about young, fresh-faced reformers coming to sweep away a bad old regime...). I hope that he will do a good job, and right some of the Bush administration's many wrongs, but he is part of the same system of power through violence of his predecessor, and that isn't going to change. Even the best governments need their citizens to be vigilant and dissenting when necessary.

There are only so many things a President of the US can do, right? He's still got, you know, the Fifth Fleet.

The good thing is, he appears to be starting off well, between the global gag rule and closing Guantanamo. Even if all he does is get rid of the most glaring problems of the past eight years, that'll be an improvement. Keep your expectations reasonable. (Though it's very hard not to feel a little tiny itty bit like Jed Bartlett is president all of a sudden. I have been watching too many West Wing episodes lately.)
