I'm still working on my rewatch notes from 1x06, Man on the Street, because I think it's ending up ficcy. But here are my thoughts from my rewatch of Echoes.
I think that this episode is my favorite one so far. Although, I nearly pissed my pants over Briar Rose. Phew!
I think that the humor of Echos made the topic easier to deal with. Because what was it really about? Rossum, mind control, and people killing others to get what they want. The humor made it palpable. It changed the episode from being this really heavy dark downer of an episode to being a thought provoking intellectual one.
I think it's wonderful that he can make us giggle even while talking about an evil pharmaceutical who is taking over the world!
I also think, in a way, it makes it even more scary, case in point - Mellie's slide into November. It was amusing, but even more scary than if Adelle had been in control. Think about it, if she had been in control, she would've raised an eyebrow and finished the phrase properly. Instead, being stoned out of her mind, she couldn't. All she could do is hide in fear.

Which is all any of us can do ...
