Dana and Raphael swear by them. They recently got another six chicks; they're up to ten birds now. Their chickens do free-range easily. Only one of them has ever attempted to cross the road. 0 problems with raptors, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, or their own three cats and one dog. Minimal requirements: a cozy coop, which can be purchased or constructed; food; water. Chicken pecks may hurt little hands, though. Not badly, but enough to make a kid cry. You know. And that many chickens will rough up your lawn, but nothing compared to what ducks'll do. Ducks.

But chickens are tame (even cuddly), self-sufficient, and pretty to look at.

Just sayin.'

DON'T TEMPT ME, WOMAN. Man, chickens are great. PLUS EGGS. I kind of wonder if I could keep them in our basement for the winter? Like, there are a lot of bugs down there, and we could bring them up for walkies?

Leigh's position is that "chickens are dirty stupid birds who deserve to get eaten." (This was articulated the day someone gave her octopus in her pad thai by mistake, and she was trying to articulate why she wanted chicken but was upset by sea creature.) Sigh, my wife.

(I forgot: chickens need bedding material, and that would be the largest expense. Pine shavings, not chips or cedar. And if you burn wood, collect the ashes. When it's cold, ash in a wide bowl makes excellent dustbathing.)

OH MAN PERSONAL EGG SUPPLY. Once you go eggs from your own chickens, you'll never go back. Far superior. All orange-yolked and delicious, none of that weak yellow-yolk crap. And you can definitely keep chickens indoors.

Hm. You can tell Leigh that if she still doesn't enjoy the chickens after you've kept them for a few weeks, humanely killing and cleaning a bird is easy.
