Yeah, it never actually said he was in the military, but It's my theory that Shinra is so anal that they wouldn't trust anyone but one of their own to head such an important project as space travel. I just figure that he retired out of anger and disgust after they scrapped the project.

Oh he'll get the idea eventually. *grin*

Thank you muchly! To be honest, I didn't think of Cloud with them either until I read Secrets by tyr_synni and Bandages by Konitsu. Neither have Cloud paired with them, but the friendship and interaction (and sarcasm) got to me. I began thinking more and more about them as a pairing. Unfortunately there is precious few fics with them in anything close to a relationship. If you want more, though, feel free to read icedark_elf's Cid/Vincent/Cloud/Rufus fics she's written for 24_runes.
