Jul 07, 2020 17:19

This is my entry for this week of LJ Idol (therealljidol). This week was an Open Topic.Whenever I hear the song "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden, I sing along with a French accent. That song conjures dune grass, cobalt sea and cerulean sky. Hot air, suffused with ocean mist, bug spray and sun block. Me and my sister, with her long blonde hair tangling in the ( Read more... )

What a beautiful story. I love the way one little thing can be the reminder of times like that. On a trip to Chicago once, my friends and I bought KT Tunstall's "Eye to the Telescope" CD to play in our rental car. Subsequently, that became the soundtrack of our entire week, and now every time I hear "Suddenly I See," I'm instantly transported back to that trip.

Your storytelling is so vivid and natural that I sometimes feel, when I'm reading your work, that I'm just lazing around the pool with my friends and being regaled by that one friend that always tells the best stories. This one was no different. Just wonderful!

Thank you so much! Ironically, my brother is a much better storyteller in person than me. He would be the one telling you stories arpund the campfire.

I love that KT Tunstall album but for different reasons. I love American Idol and first heard "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" when Katherine McPher sang it. I liked it so much I bought the album. Your trip sounds like fun! Glad that song brings it back.

I really enjoyed reading this so much! I love how certain songs can transport us back to periods of time in our lives so strongly that it feels like we're right back there and you did such a great job of capturing that here! I love the feeling in all of your pieces; the nostalgia and emotion in them always draws me and make me feel I'm right there in the story! <3

Thank you! It's amazing, isn't it? Songs are like a time travel device, I swear. Glad I could bring you along. My relationship with my sister definitely changed after that trip. And the best part is that her youngest daughter reminds me so much of her as a kid that now, I've got both my adult sister and a semblance of her kid self to spend time with.

Another remembrance triumph, A! This is perfectly told and really invokes that sense of siblinghood that so many of us leave behind as we age. I particularly loved this - It was like a slumber party that lasted for several days. because YES!

I'm so glad to hear you say that! It really was a great trip, and I have to say I actually missed her when I got home the same way I used to miss other campers after summer camp. That experience truly set us up for the relationship we have today.

Thank you! I was just telling KFP this afternoon, while we were taking a hike, that you said that and that I felt that my brother was a better storyteller. He assured me that I'm a good one, too.

What lovely memories! That sounds like a priceless vacation, and a fitting start to a close, adult relationship with your sister.

Our daughter is off camping with a friend in Utah, seeing rock parks and having adventures, and oh, how I envy her! This story captures that same kind of feeling, I think, of being young and stretching your wings. :)

I hope your daughter is having a wonderful time! Camping adventures are tons of fun, especially when you're young and don't mind sleeping on the ground.
