Oh, definitely! Especially when you're young. I'm sure we could have had a very safe, pleasant new year hanging out in one of the larger rooms at the boarding house, telling stories, maybe sipping a little wine. (We could buy it in England, though my roommate and I didn't). But we thought you absolutely had to go to Trafalgar Square!
I imagine there are many such stories about Times Square "adventures," too.
Where were you in the U.K., if you don't mind telling me? A good friend of mine spent a year abroad in Manchester and even dated a guy she met there for a while, until the long distance became too much.
My family lived in East Anglia. I'm a military brat. I was going to university in NorCal, so I could only visit over the holidays. We also opened the Tower Records there and that was a hoot!
Thanks for saying so about KFP. I've always thought so, but people see his wide brown eyes and think he looks like his father.
East Anglia is not a part of the country that we got to visit. We did make a trip up to see Stonehenge and Bath, and the big white horse on the Salisbury Plain. I have ancestors from a lot of parts of central England, northern England and Wales, but none that I've encountered so far from the East of England. I would have loved to have an excuse to visit England often in college!
Great to hear! A hundred percent non-fiction. It's funny the perspective you get on things, looking back. I now realize that Shauna was probably aware that Alex was in no shape to take care of himself and his brother, and that we needed to protect the bros. I also wonder what she thought of me and Jo: whether we were just two overgrown, silly children she had to protect, as well. Shauna was our age but had a mother-like wisdom beyond her years.
It has such a great vibe that some of my favourite coming of age stories have!! I would love to read more about your adventures as well as Shauna, Alex, his brother and Jo :D
. I now realize that Shauna was probably aware that Alex was in no shape to take care of himself and his brother, and that we needed to protect the bros. I definitely got that vibe too! I got the feeling that Shauna thought that you and Jo were sensible and that she could trust you to ensure Alex and his brother didn't end up disappearing. I had a friend when I was a teenager who was a lot like Alex (and it could be exhausting tbh!) and her older siblings and parents would often entrust me to "make sure she thinks about doing things before she does them!!" (I wasn't always successful, mind you. Stubborn and impulsive is a hard combo, lol).
Shauna was our age but had a mother-like wisdom beyond her years. - this reminds me of myself. When I was in my teens I was always the one who seemed much older, even though I wasn't actually the oldest one in my friend

Glad this makes you want to read more. That really was a special trip. Our day visiting Stonehenge also sticks in my memory. I'll definitely consider telling more college stories in the future, if the prompts lead there. I think I'm at a stage in my life where I can view them from a perspective that helps me to see the humor in it, as well as the lessons I missed at the time.
Stubborn and impulsive definitely describes Alex, which made him completely incomprehensible to me. In college, I was probably the wildest I've ever been, but I still had strict boundaries I wouldn't dare cross and risks I wouldn't dare take. Wish I could say that I was a wise one back then, but I was incredibly naive about a lot. I was smart but without tons of common sense, if you can imagine.
You DID come home with a good story! And I'm glad you shared it. Maybe being in bed might have been nicer, but, honestly, I do think we need to have those moments of bad choices in our lives at least at some points, if only for the memories and the experience to teach us to know better next time! ;-)
