This is really lovely and captures the feeling of being nineteen oh so well.

Do you know what became of Tom? Did he ever break up with Glinda? It isn't easy being 19...

Actually, she had broken up with him by the time we said our goodbyes but I was dating someone. I thought of that this morning, working out and was wondering whether it was ethical to edit the entry to add a couple sentences there. What do you think?

After years if wondering, I connected with him on Facebook, through "Katie"! He is married with kids and working for a film distribution country, and is just as brilliant and opinionated as ever. I just met up with her thus spring for the first time in years, and our little boys hit it off immediately. Must be genetic. :)

I don't think we're supposed to edit entries for anything more than a typo or broken link after the poll goes up, but at least you've commented on it here so if anyone looks they will see it. :)

It's good to know that you've reconnected via FB.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Thank you for asking the question that allowed me to put the information in the comments. That way if anyone is curious, they might read down and find out.

Facebook is amazing, except when it's not. :)

Being young is hard. I do not understand these adults who insist the teen years are the "best years of your life."

Well, maybe their adult years are even harder! We do tend to see everything with rose-colored glasses from a distance, too.

I guess I need a few hundred more years of "distance" to ever see being a teen as fun...

I don't know about high school, but college was mostly fun.

This just reads as so real. Nicely done. Glad you put the Tom postscript in your comments, though!

Thanks! If I hadn't been so frazzled this week, I would have probably included a postscript in my original piece. :)

So much subtext and real comprehension of others hovering in the music of being 19 here. I guess it's also a liminal time frame, albeit one that deserves more notice and less cliche. This goes well beyond the obvious notions; it is, therefore, extremely relatable. I really enjoyed reading it.

Thank you! I wanted to be careful not to make it too saccharine or overwrought, so I'm glad you found it relatable. It helps to have two decades of perspective on those events!
