Our cat, Luke, has been super affectionate since we got home from
Otakon. Yesterday morning, as I sat down at the computer to check e-mail before walking the dog, he made a little "mew" sound and hopped up behind me on the chair. I scooped him onto my lap, petting him with both hands as he purred happily.

You are sure right that cats are just as emotional, just in different ways.
Each one of our four cats is different in how they respond to our leaving for any reason.
Tiger the big lunk just pouts and gives us the cold shoulder until our return. Speedy the insecure cat will give us a hard time and if it is possible he will pee on something that belongs to us like the bed or our laundry. This is a problem in general though. But leaving makes it worse. Our shy kitty Midnight just hides and waits for things to settle in the packing process and then when we get home she sits and watches to make sure all the stuff comes out of that suitcase. Then there is Jackie. She just gets mad. She is always the last one to forgive us when we get home.
They are a great bunch of cats though. Sure seems like Luke is the same.

I think a lot of people don't think that cats have emotion because they don't have much of a range of facial expressions. Just my theory.
