Learning to Swim

When we last left our heroine (me!), I had tossed and turned, trying to figure out a better way to run my department at Otakon. For the first time, I was a department head, running Press Relations.

My Otakon experience on Friday, plus pics. )

Man, all of this is really amazing. It must be really interesting and frustrating all at once to work with so many different people.

Amazing, interesting, frustrating is right. At one point in the weekend, I felt all of those emotions. I think one of the best parts of helping to run Otakon is the teamwork, though. These people are great, and that's one of the reasons I keep coming back.

I admit I think it is cool that you meet so many neat musicians and other people like that. It must be something else working with all those people from the press. And keeping them in line too. Grin!

It is sort of interesting, although I spent more time talking to managers and handlers, etc., than to the musicians. With the American guests, it was a little different, because they sometimes hung out with the Guest Relations staff in the evenings. I got to know them a little bit better.

I definitely like your take on Friday, it's so different seeing it through your eyes. Looking forward to reading more.

Thanks! I already have some photos selected. It's just a matter of writing about my experiences. Usually, I would dictate them into a voice recorder while walking my dog, then transcribe them. But right now I have very little voice left, so I'm just doing it in front of the computer, the old-fashioned way!

It's nice to see this perspective. Everyone's con experience is so different, and it's difficult to find a position that grants you a broader perspective than the demands of a high-intensity job provide.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating. Over the last few years, I've been lucky to have, arguably, the best guest, industry, and press team in the biz. This year was MUCH less stressful for me (with a few exceptions) -- everyone hit their marks and knew what to do and when to call for help. And all the feedback from press has been excellent.

I think I need to post something similar.

Thank you! There's more coming from me (about Saturday and Sunday/Monday) since that's my habit. And then I might put up a general message about other thoughts, thank-yous, etc. I am indebted to you for all the help and guidance you gave me.
