Snap

The ocean, the veil, it was all gone in a sudden flash of stifling black. He could not breathe. Shifting violently for a moment, he raised his head from the pillow, raising himself up off his chest with his arms, then he turned and sat up in bed.

It was as if something tightly wound had snapped--a spring finally releasing its stored tension--and he could feel the hot tears coursing down his cheeks, and a dim ache in his chest. It was gone. But there was no regret now, just a sensation of loss opened fresh after so many centuries.

Elan released a quavering breath.
