I fucking hate the word folks. It has been in use by politicians for as far back in this election as I can remember; McCain, Obama, and Clinton and I don't think it sounds natural coming from any of them. I think it's their way of making themselves sound more down to earth or something, closer to the people, but I don't like being referred to as ( Read more... )

Weird thing about that: Volkswagen literally means "car of the people/folk," and was developed in the 1930's under Hitler's guidance. So when I hear people being called folks, I get an uneasy feeling in my stomach.

Not more than a week ago, I was at Blockbuster with one of my roommates renting a DVD, or possibly a video game. After paying, the cashier (also male, of approximately the same age as us) said "You folks have a good day."

I ranted about how much I hated that he just called us "folks" for the next ten minutes. I understand your pain.

Yeah, there was probably a corporate directive at Blockbuster handed down to the employees, instructing them to address customers as folks. Bullshit.

I've actually felt a similar discomfort from hearing 'folks' used, although I predict it to be less severe than your own, and the irritation has gone unexpressed the majority of the time.

I would like to point out that you've possibly been paying more attention to the political landscape within the past year due to the unusually high public interest in the upcoming election, which has resulted in much more headline worthy speeches made by pundits and candidates alike. I may be wrong, but that breed of persons use the word much more frequently than others.

Do not fret sir. I believe the frequency of the word's use has remained the same, but the number that reaches our ears has increased. That is a small comfort, i know, but soon this painful period of time will pass.

'Tis the weakestsauce, and I want none of it on my political or cultural steak. I want to dine on unadulterated issue dishes, let's call them dishues.

When it's a name, that's cool; when it's some pandering politician or suck-up salesman, not cool.

Tell your - Folks - I said, "Hi!" I don't really mean that. They don't know who I am.
