MLK Day edit for comment. There is racism in this country. (When I hear it defined as 'white' I'm not sure that in itself isn't racist, but I'm /not/ bringing that up to distract from the conversation.) Part of it is power: people want someone to look down on, even if (especially if) they are at the bottom of their local power structure.
Part of it is that a lot of people don't get the concept that a rising tide lifts all boats. They think that if someone else gets something, that means they must be losing something.
It's ugly.

And part of it is just fear of anyone different. If it weren't skin color, it'd be religion, and if not that, the people down the road who butter their bread on the wrong side.

ah see, not living in a society that institutionalizes racism in quite the same way due to historical reasons, we our quite for judging people for breaded products and buttering knife based reasons.
