Mrs. Lovett was a woman determined to survive, no matter what... until the bitter end.

Becae in the musical Todd is a sympathetic anti-hero driven by love & revenge. Mrs Lovett is using her relationship with to help herself because he wants to bury the Italian but for her "business needs a lift". She prob also kills off any lingering victims herself. Which makes her a murderer as well but a far more sociopathic one. And there's her treatment of Toby.

In other versions of the tale Sweeney coerces her into the grim plan bcause he needs a disposal method. It is his greed for robbing victims & his bloodlust that drives the body count.

In another version he likes her cooking. She likes his money

I dunno, just been thinkng how badly she comes across in this one compared to Todd.
Perhaps I pondered this years ago after seeing it in NY
