Yeah it can be hard to get whether they are being positive or negative just from the transcript-- as a regular listener who heard the tone of voice and delivery and is used to and understands the sense of humour it was probably clearer to me.
Overall, Chris was actually being really positive, especially for him, as he's often pretty negative, and also I don't think he likes any of the things John actually does, so that he seems to like John himself is pleasantly surprising. Dave was pretty non-plussed and Aled didn't know all that much about him. Abi sounds like a total fangirl though!
